Querbes Tennis Center Fall Fundraiser

Querbes Park was developed in 1925 as the Broadmoor Golf Club by A. C. Steere, developer. In 1944 the city took over the ownership of the property and renamed it in honor of former Mayor Andrew Querbes who served two terms beginning in 1902 and accomplished great strides in improving Shreveport. In 1964, the Capital Investment Committee, Mrs. Justin Querbes, Sr., and J. Robert Welsh both members, recommended to SPAR council, headed by A. E. Haynes, to build the Querbes Tennis Center in 1964. Clyde Fant was mayor at this time.

Thousands of people have played at these courts and have treasured memories from social and league play, junior tournaments, state tournaments, and the famous City Tennis Tournament that began somewhere in the early thirties at Princess Park and moved to Querbes Tennis Center in 1965. This tournament was one of the most anticipated local events of the year drawing huge crowds from the 1950’s to the early 1990’s. Hundreds of people would come out to watch players like Kay McDaniel, Stephanie Fess, Lauren Cotter, Andy Lloyd, Pat Harrison, Mark Weaver, Kenneth Myers, and now ranked 80 in the world but child at the time, Ryan Harrison! The tournament also held a Junior/Pro event where up-and-coming juniors took on local pro veterans. It was great times and memories had by all.

In 2011 a bond issue was passed by the city for the sole purpose of making Querbes Tennis Center ADA compliant. Those plans have now been drawn, approved, and signed off on by the mayor, and construction will begin in August. There are also funds to redo the six soft courts and will include new lighting, fencing, curbing, and shade. This will deplete the 2011 bond funds.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT to complete Querbes Tennis Center
And to make it one of the top sought after courts to play on once again!

Additional funds will be needed for complete renovation of the five hard courts, lighting, fencing, shade, etc. All monies raised for this tournament will be restricted to the renovation and improvements of Querbes Tennis Center.

Our weekend will not only consist of a two person team tennis tournament for all levels, but will also include a junior/pro player exhibition, open divisions for men and women that include junior players, food, drinks, hit for prizes, drawings, player prizes, wine pull, and more!

We invite you to a sponsorship opportunity that will help us provide a wonderful weekend while raising funds for this legend of a facility, QUERBES TENNIS CENTER!
